How to Determine the Cause of Paranormal Activity
I’ve been doing paranormal investigations almost 19 years. I’ve seen a lot during that time and as it turns out, it’s actually quite easy to determine the cause of paranormal activity. Whether you’re experiencing phenomena yourself or you’re an aspiring paranormal investigator, here are some of the things you might want to ask to help determine what’s making things go bump in the night.
I’d Like to Clarify a Few Things First:
I do paranormal investigations as a free service, so if you’re having issues please feel free to contact me.
My approach to paranormal investigations is primarily scientific and secondarily intuitive – hence the list of questions. Sure, I could impress you with my psychic medium skills by telling you what’s going on without asking, but that would require more energy on my part (in which case I would have to charge for my work), and in many cases paranormal activity can be malevolent, in which case I don’t like to leave anything to chance.
If you are considering calling a paranormal investigator out to your house, please be aware that many of them have little to no experience and will probably not have any input as far as how to quell the activity. There is also a very large chance that they will make the situation worse.
Let’s face it: most people’s paranormal background consists of the occasional Friday night Ghost Adventures marathons. Not that I’m knocking Ghost Adventures! I happen to love it – it cracks me right up! But I’ve gone into too many paranormal investigations where the situation had gotten worst after a team had previously been on the site… trying to goad the spirits into acting out. Not a great situation.
Finally, just because a house is haunted doesn’t mean there’s anything to worry about. As we’ll see, many environmental factors will accentuate paranormal activity naturally.
Ok, onto the list!
How old is the building?
Buildings get dirty, physically and energetically. The older the building, the dirtier it probably is. In the same way that something dirty puts off an odor, an old house often puts off vague traces of the events and emotions from the past. This is called a residual haunting. They are probably the most common type of haunting, they are rarely intelligent and the activity is rarely malevolent.
What type of building is it?
The shape of a building can intensify metaphysical energy. For example, under the exact same conditions, paranormal activity will be much more noticeable in a brand new Victorian home than in a brand new Mediterranean-style home. It’s not because the Victorian look so much spookier. It’s the steep roofs and amalgamation of gables and towers that make the homes a variable Feng Shui nightmare.
Also important to note, certain building materials can increase paranormal activity. Houses built out of stone much more conducive to hauntings than a wooden-frame house full of drywall.
What is the electrical situation?
Old-wiring isn’t just a safety hazard, it also feeds electromagnetic energy into the environment, which spirits both benevolent and malevolent can use to manifest. For this reason, homes near power pylons and stations are much more likely to have paranormal activity. Unfortunately, in the case of homes built near large power lines, in can be very difficult, if not impossible to remove the activity altogether.
When did the phenomenon begin?
Sometimes, an event can trigger paranormal activity, so it’s important to understand when it started and what types of things were going on in the lives of the residents during that time.
Were there any arguments? Bad storms? Power surges? Did something traumatic happen in the neighborhood? Did any new people start to visit the house more frequently? If you know exactly when the activity began, you can almost always immediately identify the cause.
Has there been any recent remodeling or cleaning of the property?
In the same way to shaking out an old rug will cast off dust, remodeling or even doing some spring-cleaning can cause metaphysical energy to reverberate through the home. Often times, the activity will settle down on its own. If it doesn’t subside, it’s worth considering that a spirit might be a little upset about the changes.
Does the property have a violent past?
It might seem cliché, but properties where traumatic events have occurred in the past, especially things like violence and death, can leave a really nasty psychic impression on a building. While it might not guarantee paranormal activity, it certainly increases the chances. Not only that, but all that residual negative energy is a prime target for low-level entities, so when these locations do become haunted, they’re more likely to harbor spookier stuff.
What is the mood of the property’s inhabitants?
Fear, anxiety, stress, sadness, anger – these are all intense emotions to be pouring out in to the environment. While occasionally feeling these is a natural part of life, constant negativity can feed negative entities in the local area and some decide to simply stick around for a while. Sudden changes in mood are also something to watch out for, as these emotions might be symptomatic of a new unwanted spiritual addition to the family.
Is the property located near a body of water?
Water seems to generate spiritual activity. Homes located near large bodies of water seem to be much more likely to harbor spirits than others. In fact, even small ponds and creeks can do the trick. This seems to be a major factor in new homes being pervaded by paranormal phenomena.
Even water pipes in a home can increase activity in a particular room. Bathrooms are a common haunt, as are closets adjacent to bathroom and kitchen pipes. Also, homes with wells are more likely to see paranormal activity than those with municipal water.
How far away is the nearest cemetery or church?
It’s not just a worn-out horror-movie trope – homes located near cemeteries are usually full of spirits. The good news is that most of these are just spirits in transit and rarely cause any real grief to the living. Homes near Churches seem to be a target as well, as many spirits are drawn to the positive spiritual energy.
What is the local geography like?
Mountains and valleys have as tenancy to channel spiritual energy. Certain stones and even soils can do the trick. Properties located near very old forests, swamps, and nearly any body of water are often more prone to paranormal activity than others.
Who on the property is being affected by the activity?
Some people are more open to the spirit world than others. In many cases, if one person is being singled out, the nature of the entity can be more easily determined. For example, children are more likely to see wandering spirits, whereas adults are more likely to attract darker entities.
Is this the residents first experience with paranormal activity?
It’s important to know if the people being affected by the activity have ever experienced something similar in other locations, or even earlier in life. Some entities are restricted to a location, while others are able to follow people from place to place. Some of the spiritual hangers-on are even capable of disappearing for a long time, only to show up later on in life during a time of stress.
How are people being affected by the activity?
Any ghost, regardless of whether it is residual, intelligent, benevolent, or malevolent, can do certain things depending on the environmental conditions. Moving things, unlocking and slamming doors, talking, playing the piano, appearing as orbs, and a ton of things in between. However, only lower-level entities (a.k.a. demons) will do things like burn, scratch, choke, molest, and possess someone against their will.
I know there are many people out there who believe the souls of the grouchy remain earth-bound and continue to do mean things in death, but this is rarely, if ever the case. As I explained in another article, demons often masquerade as people who have died. So if you’re attributing this type of behavior to dead person, it’s probably a demon in disguise.
Is anyone having unusually disturbing dreams?
Disturbing, violent, or even hyper-sexual dreams are a telltale sign of demonic activity. Usually, only one of the adults in the home will be targeted.
How old are the people who are noticing the phenomena?
Children, still fresh from the spirit world themselves, are much more likely to notice spirits of all kinds. If only children are noticing the phenomenon, it’s most likely a residual, benevolent haunting. Adults are much more attuned to negative vibrations, however – so when they begin to notice, there’s a better chance of it being something more negative, although it’s not always the case.
What methods have been tried to quell the situation?
Before I give people advice on how to deal with their paranormal activity, I always ask what they’ve already tried. Usually by the time people come time me, they’ve already tried blessings, cleansings, clearings, and exorcisms, to no avail.
Generally speaking, Feng Shui and turning that frown upside-down seem to be the best medicine!
What are the inhabitants religious background?
Finally, before I give any advice on how to move forward, I always try to get an idea of the living inhabitants’ religious backgrounds. It doesn’t really matter what the religious background is to me, but it does matter to the person dealing with the phenomena and to the spirits being dealt with.
For example, if your home was built on an Native American burial ground, it’s probably not a good idea to try casting the spirits out in the name of Jesus Christ. In such a case, a traditional blessing or prayer the native culture might find pleasing would be preferable.
Another example would be, if the people in the home are Christian, Jewish, or Muslim, it doesn’t really make sense for me to give them a Hindu mantra or prayer to recite for protection.
Drawing a Conclusion
Usually, by the time I’ve gotten through all of these questions, I know with 99% certainty exactly what the cause of the paranormal activity is, as well as how to best deal with it. I’ve already written some articles on the topic of benevolent and malevolent hauntings, which I encourage you to check out. But if you’re still not sure what to do, I’m always happy to help if I can, so don’t be afraid to contact me.
